Introduction

Join us for an immersive 8-day landscape, seascape, and cultural photography expedition through the breathtaking, diverse terrains of Kerala. Designed for photographers eager to master light, mood, and visual storytelling, this curated journey moves seamlessly from the mist-laden tea hills and cascading waterfalls of the Western Ghats down to the tranquil backwaters, coastal shores, and historic colonial streets of the Arabian Sea.

  • Munnar & The High Ranges: Capture dramatic misty mornings over hill reservoirs, winding highway light trails, sprawling emerald tea estates framing Anamudi (South India’s highest peak), misty vistas from Top Station/Gap Road, and hidden jungle waterfalls.

  • Kumarakom & Alappuzha (Alleppey): Experience the serene rhythm of the backwaters with early morning canal light, traditional open-sided country boats navigating paddy corridors in Kuttanad, minimalist long-exposure seascapes at Alappuzha’s historic pier, and dark-sky star trails over coastal coconut groves.

  • Fort Kochi & Kadamakkudy Islands: Document the timeless silhouette of iconic Chinese fishing nets during coastal sunsets, explore the rich colonial architecture and textured streetscapes of Jew Town and Mattancherry, and capture reflections across the quiet mangrove waterways of Kadamakkudy.

Led personally by Nilakkhya Dutta and Ravin Chandra, this workshop blends intensive in-field composition techniques, technical exposure handling, and structured post-processing masterclasses designed to refine your personal artistic vision across every genre of photography.

3. Fitness & Precautions for Landscape, Waterfall & Coastal Photography

  • Terrain & Elevation Profile: The tour spans from sea-level coastal backwaters in Kumarakom and Alappuzha up to the high-range mist-clad hills of Munnar (reaching elevations around 5,000–6,500+ ft at Gap Road and Top Station).

  • Physical Requirement: Moderate physical fitness is required. While there is no technical mountaineering, participants should be comfortable with short nature walks, walking along uneven plantation paths, slippery rocks around waterfalls (Lakkam/Irachil Para), and stepping in and out of traditional open country boats.

  • Leech & Monsoon/Moisture Precautions: Due to lush greenery and humidity around tea gardens and waterfalls, leeches can be encountered. Carrying salt, salt-water spray, or leech gaiters, along with good grip walking shoes, is strongly advised.

  • Wildlife & Safety Awareness: High-range areas around Mattupetty are known corridors for wild elephants; all participants must strictly adhere to the mentor/leader's instructions and stay together as a group during outdoor shoots.

  • Dynamic Coastal & Hill Weather: Tropical weather, sea breezes, and mountain mist can change rapidly. The tour mentor/leader reserves the right to alter shoot sequences, waterfall access, or boat departure timings to ensure group safety.

4. Workshop Nature, Logistics & Flexibility

  • Dedicated Photography Focus: This is an intensive Landscape, Seascape, Long-Exposure & Heritage Photography Workshop, not a casual leisure vacation. Daily schedules are structured around early morning sunrise/mist, golden hours, blue hours, and evening/night sessions.

  • Sleep & Shooting Routine: Rest is scheduled during mid-day hours when the light is harsh. Participants are expected to strictly adhere to group rise and departure timings (starting as early as 5:00 AM) to catch the best light.

  • Accommodations: Double/twin-sharing basis in handpicked scenic hotels and boutique resorts located near key photographic zones (Munnar, Kumarakom/Alappuzha, Kochi).

  • Food & Local Realities: Wholesome, fresh local meals (Kerala & South/North Indian cuisine) are provided at designated hotels and en-route restaurants. During pre-dawn departures, packed light bites (sandwiches/fruits) will be coordinated.

  • Weather & Gear Protection: Expect misty mornings, high humidity near backwaters/coasts, and occasional tropical drizzles. Rain covers for camera bags, moisture-absorbing silica pouches, and light waterproof jackets are recommended.

5. Tour Rules and Operational Etiquette

  • Transit & Roadside Stops: Roadside halts along winding hill highways (Munnar-Kochi highway, Gap Road, Marayoor route) are coordinated strictly by the tour mentor to ensure road safety and optimal compositions. Exits at specific bends are timed so the group stays on schedule.

  • Respecting Visual Angles & Frames: On beaches, piers, country boats, and narrow plantation trails, ensure you do not block fellow participants' compositions. Rotate shooting spots cooperatively.

  • Eco-Sensitivity & "Leave No Trace": Strictly zero littering across tea gardens, forest reserves, backwater canals, and beaches. Carry all plastic/waste back to proper disposal bins.

  • Responsible Gear Handling: Participants are responsible for their own gear and any partner equipment (Nikon camera bodies/lenses, Leofoto carbon-fiber tripods) used during hands-on trials.

  • Constructive Image Reviews: Evening and indoor post-processing sessions (RAW workflow, long-exposure blending, and color grading) are conducted in a supportive, constructive learning spirit.

  • Cultural & Community Respect: Seek permission before taking close-up portraits of local fishermen, herders, or artisans. Respect local customs inside historic precincts (e.g., Jew Town and Mattancherry).

6. Group Size (Minimum / Maximum)

  • Intimate Capacity: Capped at 6 to 8 participants to guarantee personalized, one-on-one on-field mentoring and tailored post-processing guidance.

  • Minimum Quorum: Requires a minimum of 5 participants to operate at the standard pricing. If the minimum number is not met, the tour may proceed with an adjusted per-person costing or be rescheduled.

7. Emergency Mid-Trip Departure

  • If a participant must leave early due to personal emergencies or health reasons, no refund will be provided for unutilized days or services. Any additional private transport costs to Cochin Airport or onward destinations must be borne entirely by the participant.

8. Recommended Photography Equipment

  • Camera Bodies: Any DSLR or mirrorless camera with full manual exposure capability.

  • Lenses:

    • Ultra-wide to Wide-Angle (14–24mm / 16–35mm): Crucial for expansive tea garden vistas, backwater boat interiors, heritage streets, and night sky/star trail compositions.

    • Standard Zoom (24–70mm): Ideal for general landscape frames, water reflections, and environmental portraits.

    • Telephoto Zoom (70–200mm / 100–400mm): Essential for isolating distant mountain ridges, tea worker details, Anamudi peak compression, and coastal/bird silhouettes.

  • Filters & Accessories (Crucial for this Tour):

    • Sturdy Tripod: Mandatory for blue-hour shots, highway light trails, silky waterfall textures, pier long exposures, and nightscapes.

    • Filters: Neutral Density Filters (ND10 / 10-stop and 6-stop) for super long exposures at Alappuzha beach pier/waterfalls, and a Circular Polarizer (CPL) to cut glare from water surfaces and enrich green foliage.

    • Other Accessories: Shutter release remote / intervalometer (optional but helpful), L-bracket for seamless horizontal/vertical switches, lens cleaning cloths/blower, extra camera batteries, and spare high-speed memory cards.

9. Non-Photographer Companions

  • Accommodations are arranged strictly on a same-sex twin-sharing basis in quality resorts/hotels. Couples or friends traveling together will be allotted double rooms.

13. Mobile Connectivity & Power Backup

  • Mobile network connectivity (Jio, Airtel, Vi) is widely available across Kochi, Kumarakom, Alappuzha, and most parts of Munnar town.

  • Certain high-range patches and interior plantation pockets near Mattupetty/Top Station may have patchy reception (where BSNL typically works best).

  • All hotels and resorts have standard electricity and charging facilities. Bringing an extension cord/multi-plug board is recommended for charging multiple camera batteries, power banks, and laptops simultaneously.

14. Tour Mentorship & Leadership

  • Lead Photography Mentor: Nilakkhya Dutta (Official Nikon Creator and Landscape Photographer) and Ravin Chandra.

Any return transit costs incurred will be borne entirely by the participant.

  • Alcohol Policy: Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited during field shoots, transit, country boat cruises, and evening nightscape/light-trail sessions.
